Labour Court to begin virtual case hearings from 2 June

The Labour Court is to convene virtual case hearings for the first time from 2 June in order to comply with public health guidelines on the coronavirus.

The majority of currently scheduled hearings involve industrial relations matters and will be heard in private.

However, in a statement, the Labour Court says it is satisfied that the new arrangements will provide a full opportunity for disputing parties to outline their positions and respond to any positions tabled by another party.

The court says it is also satisfied that the arrangements will also enable it to fully understand the positions of the parties, and to make recommendations aimed at resolving the disputes in question.

It will continue to schedule hearings in virtual court-rooms “wherever possible” from 2 June, and will publish its programme of employment rights-based hearings weekly on its website as usual.

The court says it is committed to fully supporting and observing public health guidance and protocols regarding a safe return to normal working – and that hearings in physical court rooms will resume “when such advice permits”.
